If the dog is healthy, the owner is happy...
Dr. Dorina Lux has written a practical and affordable guide for all dog owners, dog trainers and veterinarians
In the guide " Green medicine cabinet for dogs ", veterinarian Dr. med. vet. Dorina Lux offers valuable information about active ingredients, preparation and use of local, widespread medicinal plants. This allows minor complaints and some more serious illnesses of your four-legged friends to be treated naturally and safely.
Gentle and inexpensive natural medicine
Pet owners, and especially dog owners, know that man's best friend can suffer from numerous ailments and illnesses since its domestication thousands of years ago. This not only puts a strain on the health and well-being of animals and humans, but can also be very expensive for owners. In addition, many medications were and are not available at all due to a lack of capacity or production stoppages during or because of the corona pandemic - not to mention the health and environmental risks of pharmaceutical products.
Dr. med. vet. Dorina Lux was already interested in holistic medicine and naturopathy for small animals during her veterinary medicine studies and specialized in the use of local medicinal plants with her mobile veterinary practice. With her compact guide, she offers a real and easy-to-use alternative to conventional veterinary medicine. With basic knowledge of medicinal herbs and their active ingredients as well as practical tips for treating typical symptoms, she makes a valuable contribution to "enabling your dog to live as long and healthy a life as possible with gentle medicine."
Dog pharmacy on the doorstep
Unfortunately, the knowledge of our ancestors was forgotten with the development of chemical medicines, although many modern medicines are based on plant ingredients. People learned which medicinal plants are effective for which diseases not only through trial and error, but also, in particular, through observing animals.
If you have the opportunity, it is advisable to grow medicinal plants in your own garden. This does not have to mean more work, quite the opposite: many medicinal plants, such as nettles, are rejected as weeds in the garden and are regularly weeded or mown down. If you simply let the plants grow instead, the garden will quickly be transformed into a green medicine cabinet. Many of the medicinal plants presented in the guide can also be found in forests and on the edges of meadows. Simply mixing them into the feed is probably the oldest and most effective way of administering medicinal plants to animals.
The book also contains helpful information about what needs to be considered when growing and collecting medicinal plants. But if you want to make things easier for yourself: Most of the medicinal plants presented can also be purchased in suitable form and high quality in stores.
Basic knowledge of medicinal herbs and medicinal plant profiles
In the first part of the book, readers receive valuable information about the ingredients, collection, processing and preparation of medicinal plants. They also learn how to successfully treat illnesses in their four-legged friends with medicinal herbs. So-called phytotherapy can be used effectively for simple complaints and minor illnesses ranging from weak immune systems to diarrhea and vomiting to parasite infestation and gingivitis. But serious illnesses such as heart failure or even tumors can also be combated with herbal alternatives or can at least support conventional treatment.
The second part of the book contains illustrated portraits of medicinal plants: A total of 27 medicinal plants, from birch to wormwood, are described with their ingredients, their effects, their areas of application and the correct use. The appropriate dosage depends on the dog's body weight. Most of the medicinal plants described can be used by laypeople without hesitation; the few exceptions where the exact dosage must be observed are specially marked.
