Self-healing through humming
Self-healing through humming
Humming is one of the most powerful natural abilities of every human being. It not only lowers blood pressure and heart rate, but also stimulates the release of vital hormones. Through targeted exercises, conscious humming can be used as a therapeutic and transformative tool.
The beneficial power of self-generated sound
In the foreword to the German edition of "The Humming Effect," philosopher and sound healing specialist Dr. John Beaulieu writes that humming is an instinctive human ability to restore inner balance: "Everyone in the world hums, regardless of culture or religious affiliation." The initial idea for what is probably the first book on this topic was to make the audience aware of the healing effect of self-generated sounds. The two authors , Jonathan and Andi Goldman, explain the scientific basis for this and show that it is an effective method of self-healing: "When you read this book, you will discover that humming is an extraordinary tool for healing and change."
The award-winning composer of music for healing and meditation and the holistic psychotherapist have been working together in the field of sound healing for over twenty years. Their book "Healing Humming" is primarily intended to inform about the inherent power of humming and to allow the reader to experience the healing effects of the self-generated sounds through practical exercises. The positive results are scientifically proven and they promote not only health but also happiness and a general feeling of well-being.
Scientifically proven effects of humming
A study by the Nepal Medical College on the effects of Hindu breathing exercises found that these led to a reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and a slight reduction in heart rate. Another study by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience in India also demonstrated aspects of a stress-relieving effect of humming. Humming for just five minutes can radically reduce stress levels. Scientists in Sweden who studied the effects of humming found that it triggers the release of nitric oxide in a specific area of the body, namely the nasal cavity. Among other things, nitric oxide strengthens the immune system, the cardiovascular system and the respiratory system. Above all, it leads to a dilation of the blood vessels, which improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure.
This and other research led the authors to realize that humming can be used as an internal sound massage - with all the health benefits that this brings, including strengthening the nervous system and promoting heart and circulatory health. This concept of massaging the body using self-generated sounds is a principle of vibrational healing that most sound therapists, as well as massage therapists, find effective.
Healing through sounds and deep breathing
For this method of healing using sound, you can think of a healthy body as an orchestra playing in balance and harmony. Basically, vibrations like humming can be used to restore the natural resonance of an organ or system. When an organ begins to vibrate at a frequency other than its natural frequency, its energy becomes blocked. The organ then quickly becomes unbalanced - becoming vulnerable to viruses, bacteria, disease, wear and tear, and so on. When its natural frequency is amplified, the organ's resonance is restored; it regains its energy, the invader that damaged it is destroyed, and the organ can heal.
Humming, whether general or directed at a specific area of the body, also sets other areas into vibration, massages and activates cells, the circulatory system and the lymphatic system. While lymphatic circulation is improved and the immune system is stimulated, the oxygen content in the cells also increases. This is partly due to the fact that humming involves deep breathing, which improves the supply of oxygen to the cells: "If you combine conscious breathing with humming, you increase this relaxation response and significantly reduce your stress levels."
