Henry Red Cloud on 8 June 2016 in Murnau: “Out of respect for the earth”
Henry Red Cloud on 8 June 2016 in Murnau: “Out of respect for the earth”
"We cannot change what happened. But we can learn from it, look forward and move on. For our children. And a better world." Today's entrepreneur and visionary Henry Red Cloud, a fifth-generation direct descendant of the famous Lakota Indian chief Red Cloud, will be coming to the Murnau Cultural and Conference Center on his European tour on June 8, 2016 (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. He wants to deliver the "Indian message" but also raise money and seek support for his "Lakota Solar Energy" project. Mankau Verlag is one of the event's many supporters.
Henry Red Cloud wants to promote his projects and raise money. But the Lakota also has an important message for us Europeans, who are becoming ever more entangled in current crises: It is possible to find solutions to the crisis, provided we remember what we have lost. If we honor the earth again and link the old knowledge with the new, it is possible to reorient ourselves.
Bitter poverty in the Lakota reservation
Henry Red Cloud, who still speaks for his tribe from the perspective of the population, aims to continue the multifaceted good work in the Lakota reservation in Pine Ridge. Unemployment is still at 89 percent and there is bitter poverty. Nevertheless, the former steelworker decided to return with his family to Pine Ridge, where his ancestors have lived since 1876. It is precisely in this place that he works with what is available to him, what he has access to: using the old knowledge in a new way to create future prospects for himself and his fellow campaigners.
With Red Cloud, hope returns
Red Cloud began to install solar panels on the poorly insulated trailers and huts; then came wind energy systems, later solid stone and ecological mud/straw houses. A training center was built where young Indians learn handicraft skills. Red Cloud also fulfilled his ancestors' dream: he brought the almost extinct bison back to the area around the Black Hills. In these and other projects, all of which seemed unthinkable and which restore people's self-determination and independence, he always combines the old knowledge of his ancestors with new technologies and findings. He opens up educational and development opportunities for the people of Pine Ridge that they would otherwise hardly be able to access.
The ancient natural knowledge of the Lakota can play an existential role for the entire planet today. This is another reason why we support Henry Red Cloud's solar initiative.
