On December 8, 2022 , Stephen Harrod Buhner, one of the best known and most convincing experts in medicinal plant science, passed away.
A painful loss for herbal medicine worldwide. Buhner had German roots and came from a family that emigrated from the Osnabrück region to America in the mid-19th century. His ancestors for 300 years included a variety of doctors and healers. As a child, he was particularly influenced by the time he spent with his great-grandfather Cecil Harrod, who was an expert on herbs. Buhner's path into the world of herbal medicine began when he was almost 30 years old.
In his work he was the first to combine traditional healing knowledge, plant medicine and modern science. He founded an evidence-based herbal medicine that included analyses of thousands of studies. His main works include Herbal antibiotics , Herbal antivirals and Healing Lyme . The books Sacred Plant Medicine , The Lost Language of Plants and The Secret Teaching of Plants are passionate pleas for the preservation of the nature of our planet, for a holistic spiritual attitude towards every form of life. He published 23 books, countless magazine articles, short stories and poems and was one of the most successful non-fiction authors of herbal medicine. His most important works are also available in German.
Buhner was a welcome guest at international congresses, gave lectures, corresponded with colleagues and countless people seeking advice from all over the world. He was a senior researcher at the Foundation for Gaian Studies for 30 years. The "Buhner Protocol" for treating Lyme disease and associated infections remains a valuable option for many desperate Lyme disease patients.
The German-American ethnobotanist Wolf-Dieter Storl described Buhner as one of the best-known and most convincing phytotherapists: "His concepts and therapy suggestions are scientifically proven, the facts are correct, the connections are clearly formulated and wide-ranging. And - Buhner's information is suitable for practical use."
On December 8, 2022, Stephen Harrod Buhner died at the age of 70 in New Mexico, USA, from complications of a long-standing lung disease.
