Side effects and unrecognized physical deficiencies call into question the frequent use of psychotropic drugs
The compact guide “Natural Antidepressants” informs you that it is often possible to overcome a low mood using very simple and natural means.
Souls in turmoil
The dark stories of Edgar Allan Poe, the paintings of Vincent van Gogh and the symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven are among the greatest works of art of humanity that still fascinate us today. These and other works are often the expression of the emotional turmoil that their creators suffered from throughout their lives. Anyone who has endured the rage of mania or the mental anguish of depression or experienced it as an observer knows the explosive power of extreme moods. "If the delicate structure of moods is beyond our control and the balance of emotions is disturbed, then we feel restricted or ill," writes medical journalist and self-help author Dr. Eberhard J. Wormer.
In his compact guide "Natural Antidepressants" he presents a selection of the most important alternative remedies and measures that can effectively help to overcome a depressive episode. Because it doesn't always have to be psychotropic drugs: "Some people who have struggled with depression suddenly or for years can hardly believe it when they are freed from their mental anguish within a short period of time through vitamin D, vitamin B12 or iron, for example."
The dark valley of depression
In psychiatry, depression is one of the so-called affective disorders. People who are in a depressed mood tend to withdraw. Thoughts circle around in their heads and worry those affected. They are often vaguely sad, feel empty and lost - or have lost all kind of feeling. The future seems bleak, fears and pessimism are intrusive. A typical symptom of depression is the loss of interest in normally pleasant activities: neither music nor cinema, sport or hobbies nor the beauty of nature bring joy - everything seems dull and lifeless.
Depression also leads to disturbances in thinking and mood. Thought processes slow down, lose their meaning, memory deteriorates and concentration suffers. Depressed people prefer to avoid the company of other people and stay alone to hide their depression. They feel weak and tired, doubt themselves more and more - in a word: they are unhappy. The world seems to them like a horrible place from which it is better to escape. Real depression is therefore a life-threatening condition that requires urgent action.
Antidepressant therapy options
Complaints such as previously unknown weakness, sleep disorders, strange sensations of pain, depressed mood, difficulty concentrating or an indefinable general lack of motivation lead those affected to seek medical help. "If you mention these complaints to your doctor and he suggests prescribing a sleeping pill and/or antidepressant - without asking and without a physical examination - all alarm bells should ring! You won't get rid of your depression that easily, it's impossible!" warns Dr. Wormer. In fact, doctors often prescribe antidepressants far too quickly - without telling them that they will only take effect weeks later (if at all) and that they can cause distressing side effects.
There are numerous, often simple and surprisingly effective options for getting depressive moods under control or preventing them. These include medicinal herbs, aroma and light therapies, sleep cures and homeopathy. Stress reduction measures and psychotherapy have also proven to be very effective in coping with a depressive phase. There are numerous psychotherapeutic methods that are a valuable addition to antidepressant therapy. Wormer's top priority is medical advice in a doctor's consultation, comprehensive information about the depressive illness for everyone involved and tailored support for those affected.
