Culinary and medicinal treasures to collect yourself!
The fascinating shadowy realm of mushrooms is full of secrets. On the one hand, they have been used as food for thousands of years, but on the other hand, they are more closely related to humans and animals than to plants. Due to their special way of life and unique survival strategies, they have always been considered to be special medicinal remedies.
The knowledge of the healing power of mushrooms from local forests, meadows and gardens has only recently been rediscovered by both folk medicine and medical research. For interested laypeople, but also for experienced mushroom pickers, amazing opportunities are opening up to add lesser-known species to their repertoire or to get to know popular edible mushrooms from a completely new perspective.
The compact guide is intended as an identification, cooking and medicinal book in one. It covers the entire process of using local mushrooms: from finding and collecting to characteristics and preparation to targeted disease prevention and folk medicine treatment of numerous ailments.
- From oyster mushrooms to tinder fungus – a portrait of 20 native mushroom species
- Numerous recipes and instructions for the processing and production of oils, ointments, teas, tinctures
- Helpful tips for safe collection, valuable information on the ingredients and practical application recommendations

Foreword to the compact guide
There are many more interesting mushrooms around us than you might think. You probably know chanterelles, button mushrooms and porcini mushrooms and many delicious mushroom dishes. But would you have thought that mushrooms can also be used to prevent, treat and alleviate illnesses? And do you perhaps even know tree mushrooms that are inedible but have medicinal properties? If not, then I would like to open up a new world to you with this book.
There are many books about mushrooms. Some describe edible mushrooms from the forest, others medicinal mushrooms from the shops. This book does both in one and introduces you to 20 medicinal mushrooms from our forests that you can collect yourself. Many of them are also available in winter when nothing else grows. Like collecting herbs, mushroom hunting can be deeply satisfying, the forest itself is a "medicine", a filling station for the senses, for the soul, for mobility and the immune system.
I wish you natural forests in which a variety of mushrooms find a habitat, and lots of joy in collecting these amazing creatures!
Yours, Gerit Fischer Gablitz, in summer 2023
