Can a text that is around 3,000 years old help solve the problems of the 21st century? An impending climate collapse, worldwide injustice and destructive (self-)exploitation in a globalized growth economy determine our everyday lives today. Nevertheless, the Ten Commandments of the Bible point the way to an ethics of life and for the future of our world.
Beware of new idols!
Be careful with the name of God!
Enjoy the day of rest!
Respect your livelihood!
Stand up for the good life!
Nurture your relationships and those of others!
Protect everyone’s property!
Stick to the truth!
Don't be greedy!
Bernhard Suttner is not satisfied with the conventional interpretations of what is probably the best-known Bible text. His new look at the familiar formulations of the Ten Commandments opens up surprising perspectives of provocative topicality: What do "bargain prices" have to do with the prohibition of murder, for example, or why can consumption be suspected of theft?
Above all, however, the Ten Commandments are not to be understood as a moral corset, but as a call to liberation: in this way, we can turn away from the compulsion to consume and achieve a fair and just partnership between people in one world and with future generations.
With illustrations by Eva Suttner and a foreword by Prof. Dr. Dr. Franz Josef Radermacher.
